Airline Bag Policies – What You Need to Know

Nothing can strike fear into an air traveler’s confused heart like an airline’s baggage policy. Most airlines try to tell us how straightforward their bag policy is, and yet a lot of people get surprised by fees every time they fly. We want to share what we’ve learned – the good, the bad and the confusing. Let’s just say that not every airline approaches baggage in the same way Cheapest Flight Fare with Holiday Package. We want to shed some light. Let’s do this.
Southwest Charges No Fees at All

Not all airlines are in the business of complicating your baggage situation. But it’s a very short list of airlines that don’t charge for bags. In fact, there’s just one. Southwest is the only airline to not charge for bags at all. There are rules to follow, however.
CHECKED: Each bag must be 50 pounds or less and be 62” or less (length + width + height). Overweight items up to 80” will be accepted for a fee of $75.

CARRYON: You are limited to one bag and one personal item per person. Your carryon bag should be 10 x 16 x 24” or less. If your carryon does not meet the size requirements, you will need to check it at the gate.

The Lowest Bag Fees and Best Value
A few airlines get high marks from us for keeping bag fees fairly low. Alaska, America, Delta, and Hawaiian are all in this “best of the rest” category. You can’t do better than this if you like to choose your seat which Southwest doesn’t allow you to do. These airlines also generally offer a few more basic amenities (food service and outlets are also not on the menu with Southwest).
Alaska Airlines Bag Policies

CHECKED: Alaska charges $30 for your first checked bag, and $40 for the second. Each bag must be 50 lbs. or less and be 62” or less (length + width + height). Overweight items will be accepted for a fee of $100 and must be no more than 51-100 pounds and 63-115”.

CARRYON:
You are limited to one bag and one personal item per person. Your carryon bag should be 22” x 14” x 9” (or 45 linear inches total), including wheels and handles. Your personal item should be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

American Airlines Bag Policies

CHECKED: You can check up to 10 bags when flying on domestic, transatlantic or transpacific routes. You can check up to 5 bags if you’re traveling to or through Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. American charges $30 for your first checked bag, and $40 for the second.

In all regions except to/from Australia and New Zealand, your checked bags must be 50 lbs. or less and must total 62” or less when you add the total outside dimensions of each bag, length + width + height.

When traveling to or from Australia and/or New Zealand, your bags can weigh up to 70 lbs. each.

CARRYON: You are limited to one bag and one personal item per person. Your carryon bag should be 22” x 14” x 9”, including wheels and handles. If your carryon does not meet the size requirements, you will need to check it at the gate. Your personal item should be able to fi under the seat in front of you.

Delta Airlines Bag Policies

CHECKED: Delta charges $30 for your first checked bag, and $40 for the second. Each bag must be 50 pounds or less and be 62” or less (length + width + height). Overweight items will be accepted for a fee of $100 for bags 51-70 lbs. and $200 for bags 71-100 lbs.

CARRYON: You are limited to one bag and one personal item per person. Your carryon bag should be 22” x 14” x 9” (or 45 linear inches total), including wheels and handles. Your personal item should be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Hawaiian Airlines Bag Policies

CHECKED: Hawaiian charges $30 for your first checked bag, and $40 for the second between the islands and North America. Each bag must be 50 pounds or less and be 62” or less (length + width + height). Overweight items will be accepted for a fee of $100 for bags 51-70 lbs. and $200 for bags 71-100 lbs.

Travelers within the islands are charged $25 for your first checked bag, and $35 for the second. Travelers to international destinations from Hawaii can check up to two bags for free.

CARRYON: You are limited to one bag and one personal item per person. Your carryon bag should be 22” x 14” x 9” (or 45 linear inches total), including wheels and handles. Your personal item should be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

You’ll Pay a Little More

Both Jetblue and United have a more complicated bag fees schedule, but adhere to basically the same policy as the aforementioned airlines for carryon.

Jetblue Airlines Bag Policies

CHECKED: If you fly Blue Basic or Blue within the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, Jetblue charges $35 for your first checked bag, and $45 for the second.

If you fly Blue Basic or Blue between the U.S. and the U.K., Jetblue charges $65 for your first checked bag, and $105 for the second.

For all destinations, Jetblue charges $150 each for 3 or more additional bags. Overweight items will be accepted for a fee of $150 for bags 51-70 lbs. and $150 for bags 71-99 lbs (except for on flights to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Peru or the Port of Spain).

CARRYON: If you fly Blue Basic, a carryon bag is not allowed. A personal item is permitted and should be able to fit under the seat in front of you. Exceptions will be made for the following travelers: customers traveling to and from London, active U.S. military, unaccompanied minors, and customers combining a Blue Basic fare with an Even More Space seat (on all legs, if connecting).

If you fly Blue, you are limited to one bag and one personal item per person. Your carryon bag should be 22” x 14” x 9” (or 45 linear inches total), including wheels and handles. Your personal item should be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

United Airlines Bag Policies

CHECKED: United makes it tricky to know exactly how much you’ll pay for your checked bags before you buy, but offer an online tool you can use to find out. Both Basic Economy and Economy tickets have the same checked bag policy. United strongly encourages passengers to pre-pay for checked baggage (up to 9 bags) at the time of booking.

Each bag must be 50 pounds or less and be 62” or less (length + width + height). Overweight items will be accepted for a fee of $100 for bags 51-70 lbs. and $200 for bags 71-100 lbs.

CARRYON: If you fly Basic Economy, a carryon bag is not allowed. A personal item is permitted and should be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

If you fly Economy, you are limited to one bag and one personal item per person. Your carryon bag should be 22” x 14” x 9” (or 45 linear inches total), including wheels and handles. Your personal item should be able to fit under the seat in front of you. If your items do not meet the size limitations you may have to check them to your final destination, and additional charges may apply.

Spirit and Frontier – Tread Carefully!

These low cost airlines offer rock bottom prices, but if you underestimate your baggage needs, you could find yourself paying through the nose on your travel day. Best to plan ahead and be careful to pay for your bags at the time of booking. For both airlines, the longer you wait – the more you’ll pay! Buy at the time of booking or online for the best fares. The prices go up if you pay at the ticket counter at the airport. And if you wait until you get to the gate? Fuggetaboutit. You’ll pay through the nose.

Frontier Airlines Bag Policies

CHECKED: Each bag must be 50 pounds or less and be 62” or less (length + width + height). Overweight items will be accepted for a fee of $75 for bags 51-99 lbs. Use Frontier’s baggage tool to get the specific rate for your route.

That’s the whole enchilada! Keep in mind that these guidelines should not substitute for the airline’s published information (which, truth be told, can sometimes change). For that reason, we always recommend travelers double-check the policies for their flight at time of booking. You can also reference our help section or reach out to us at help@cheapair.com. It’s that time of year again! The spookiest time – when we share some of our favorite creepy, haunted and otherwise unexplainable destinations to you. Here’s what we’ve come up with – guaranteed to put you in the Halloween spirit!

Wind Phone, Ōtsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan

When Itaru Sasaki lost his cousin in 2010, he didn’t know where to put his grief. So he came upon the idea to put a phone booth in his garden where he could “call” and have a one-way conversation with his cousin. Then, in 2011, a massive Tsunami and earthquake decimated the town he lived in, killing more than 10% of the residents. Residents of Ōtsuchi in the Iwate Prefecture soon spread the word and more and more people came to call their loved ones. Now he gets visitors from around the world, all hoping to connect with someone on the other side.

Amityville House, Amityville New York

amityville house, new york

In the early 70’s, this little house on the south side of Long Island became the site of a notorious murder. Robert De Feo shot and killed 6 members of his own family. The next family to live in this house, George and Kathy Lutz and their 3 children, claim they were terrorized by paranormal activity and left after just 28 days. A famous movie, “The Amityville Horror,” was made in 1979 and from there the legend was set in stone. The house is still there, and you can drive by it – on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

gettysburg battlefield, pennsylvania

One of the most famous battles of the Civil War occurred in Gettysburg. The battlefield left more than 50,000 soldiers dead and dealt a crushing defeat to the Confederacy – more than a third of General Lee’s army. Is it any wonder that people believe that hallowed ground to be haunted? You can even take a Haunted Tour of the battlefield and other spooky spots.

Winchester House, San Jose, California

winchester house, san jose, califormia

It would be hard to do a “Haunted Places” list without including the Winchester Mystery House. Sarah Winchester was married to the rifle-maker’s son and maybe not the most stable woman around. After a period of feeling “cursed,” Sarah sought out the advice of a fortuneteller. She was told that the ghosts of those who died from her family’s guns killed her family. To keep away the vengeful spirits, she commissioned a nonsensical, over the top mansion with staircases that lead directly into the ceiling, doors that open onto brick walls, and windows that lead to secret passages. And for years tourists have been flocking to the house to marvel at its curiosities.

Snake Island, Brazil

Ilha da Queimada, located 90 miles off the coast of Brazil near Sao Paulo is only 106 acres in size, but it’s land is inhabited by the endangered lancehead pit viper, which has a diet of birds. Still, you probably don’t want to meet a pit viper, let alone an island full of them (one snake per square meter, the Brazilian government reports), so it’s closed to the public to protect both the vipers and the humans.

Tower of London, London, England

tower of london at night, london

Did you know that the Tower of London is the most haunted spot in the city? It’s seen a fair share of torture and murder in its history. The most famous ghost is Anne Boleyn, who was beheaded on the outdoor green. What was her crime? Well, on orders from her husband Henry VIII, she was beheaded for the unforgivable sin of giving birth to a stillborn son. Anyway, plenty of other people were put to death there – but Anne’s ghost is justifiably furious. And when people see her, she’s typically walking around carrying her own severed head.

No one knew exactly why he made this choice, but the island was in a lake where a young girl had drowned. One day, Don Julian saw a doll floating in the lake. He fished it out and hung it in a tree, in order to appease the spirit of the dead girl. From there, his collection grew. When he died in 2001, his body was found in the lake – drowned at the exact spot he always claimed to have seen the spirit of the dead girl. Tourists have flocked to the location ever since to pay their respects and freak themselves out.

TRAVEL NEWS

Would you be upset if your partner upgraded their airline ticket and left you in Economy?

There was a viral moment on the internet a couple of weeks ago on Reddit’s popular AITA feature. Basically, this young woman shared a story about her boyfriend, an expensive flight, and his need to fly First Class without her. After agreeing to a vacation she could barely afford, and after pitching him to fly Spirit Airlines with her, he declined. The boyfriend convinced her to fly on a more expensive airline, and then, once she reluctantly agreed – told her he would be flying First Class. But there was a catch – he was only upgrading himself.

Can you upgrade yourself to First Class and leave a travel partner in Economy?

Now we at CheapAir.com don’t want to cause problems between loved ones – but we’re curious: would this upset you as much as it upset this young woman? After all, most of the time you’re in the opposite situation. Maybe you want to sit next to your significant other, but your seat has inexplicably been given to someone else on the plane. Or, sometimes you might volunteer to give up your seat to help another couple or family get to sit together. But what if your partner decides to upgrade and leave you in Economy? Is that acceptable airplane etiquette? And if you’re “team upgrade” what circumstances make it acceptable?

Is needing more leg room justification enough?

Some people might say that an extra tall or large person might simply choose First Class to avoid the physical discomfort of a seat that’s too small. Or maybe you believe that someone who works hard has earned the right to a little comfort. Or let’s take it even further. Maybe you just think if you can afford it, you shouldn’t apologize to anyone for upgrading yourself. We’ll call those folks “Team No Regrets.”

Some people would say this is just rude

On the other hand, if you find this unacceptable, why did you? Is it just impolite? Do you find it disrespectful to leave your fiancee in Economy while you’re hobnobbing with the beautiful people in First Class?

We want to know what you think about ditching your travel partner for an upgrade into First Class. Is it a “do” or a “don’t”? Tell us what you think about it in the comments below.

EVERGREEN • HOLIDAY FLIGHTS

All the Ways You Can Save on Holiday Flights and Hotels with CheapAir.com

Traveling by air for the holidays this year? Like a lot of us, you might be out of practice. We’ll be sharing some of our best tips over the next few weeks, so you’re sure to have a smooth trip from booking tickets to navigating the airport. This week we’re sharing our best tips for saving money while booking flights for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Years.
Fly Now, Pay Later

Did you know CheapAir.com has a monthly payment option? Typically, flights are the most expensive part of a trip, and now the up front costs don’t have to derail your plans to visit family or take a winter vacation! Our finance partner Affirm offers 3, 6, or 12 month options to pay for both flights and hotel stays.

The process to qualify is simple, straightforward and doesn’t require a credit check.

Shop for Flights Early and Often
We’ve been selling flights and advising travelers for a lot of years. One thing that holds true year after year – waiting until the last minute will NOT save you money. Rather, we suggest you start shopping early. Flight prices are pretty volatile, with the average seat changing upwards of 30 times before the flight actually leaves. If you start shopping on the early side, you will be able to get a sense of what is a “good” fare. And when a good fare pops up – we highly recommend you buy it when you see it. The good fares don’t last.

Once you start researching flights, we automatically save your searches for you. When you come back you can pull it up under the My Search section of our website. You don’t have to remember anything – we do that work for you!
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Just as important as shopping early is not waiting until the last minute in hopes of a last minute sale! Those simply do not occur around the holidays. The airlines are in the business of making money and they know that people will spend more around the holidays. The danger zone for getting a good airfare is generally 2 weeks out from your travel dates or less. We don’t want to scare you off – there will probably be flights to buy if you wait – but they are very unlikely to be a bargain.

Same goes for hotels. The longer you wait, the more expensive the rooms get. Another reason you should book hotels early is choice. The later you wait to book, the less chance the room you want will be available. A lot of hotels get fully booked for the holidays – and with ongoing staff shortages, you might find there’s even less hotel rooms available than usual. Some hotels are limiting the number of rooms being booked for just this reason.

A Flexible Air Traveler Has the Advantage
When shopping, don’t underestimate the savings you might unearth when you keep dates loose. Use our holiday planning calendar to identify the dates that are the best value and fly on those if you can!

Also, when shopping for individual flights, you can sometimes shave off costs by checking alternate airports when available and mixing and matching airlines. A frequent flyer needs to book with specific carriers, but the rest of us can save money sometimes if we’re willing to book one airline on the outbound flight and another on the return.

When booking a hotel stay, know that room rates are often much more expensive on the weekend. Book a weekday stay and save!
Take Advantage of Price Drop Payback

When you book a flight with CheapAir.com, you book a little bit of insurance as well. We promise to honor the price you paid for a ticket, even if the flight price goes down – to the tune of up to $100. It’s called

Price Drop Payback, and it means you’ll never have to ask yourself “what happens if the price goes down after I pay?”
We’re expecting a busy holiday season. Make sure you get your flight savings!

BEST DAYS TO FLY FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Holiday Cheap Flights Report 2021

As travel continues to recover and more Americans feel safe to travel, all projections signal a very busy holiday season for 2021.

CheapAir’s Holiday Flights Report helps you make decisions about holiday airfare. Our simple color-coded calendars and charts will lend a hand so you can identify the best days to purchase your airfare at the lowest prices.

This year airfares are trending almost 10% less than 2019 prices, but about 13% more than last year. This is important, because though the fares are slightly more expensive than last year, prices were 20% cheaper than normal in 2021 – a precipitous drop in holiday airfare just doesn’t usually happen. We have the pandemic to thank for that. But in context, we’re still seeing lower prices on average than we might have expected, and a lot of great value days for travelers.

Don’t wait until prices go up. Demand will almost certainly be greater than available flights this year. We recommend buying early.
